Goal 5:  By 2010,
South Dakota will increase educational outcomes for Native American students.
Objective 5A: Implement a Native American Education Act to address critical education issues related to South Dakota students, staff and schools.
Initiatives:
1. Establish the Indian Education Act.
Review Indian Education Acts from other states.
Create language in the Native American Education Act that addresses educational needs in South Dakota.
Use Native American Advisory Council as a review board for Native American Education Act.
Propose 2007 South Dakota Indian Education Act to Governor.
Propose 2007 South Dakota Indian Education Act to legislature.

2. Produce an information packet for South Dakota schools to use as teacher training materials.
Work with South Dakota Public Broadcasting to create cultural awareness training materials (dvds and facilitator's guide) and distribute to schools.


Objective 5B:  Improve graduation rates of Native American students.
Provide summer school academies for Native American high school students.
Implement the GEAR UP program that utilizes and expands existing Native American summer programs.

3. Provide access to Native American language and culture through distance learning and other delivery methods.
Research models that implement the teaching of Native American culture and language.
